“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice. “You must be,” said the Cat, or you wouldn’t have come here.”
The lines from Alice in Wonderland might resonate with mini-mad miniaturists everywhere. They certainly did with Tanya Chilton when she discovered our all-encompassing hobby during the pandemic.
Three years later and Tanya had finished her first house, a colourful extravaganza themed around the Lewis Carroll novel, complete with mad hatter’s tea party. Tanya takes Sandra Harding on a tour this issue, and you can only admire what she’s achieved in such a short time. She’s even mastered a Cricut Maker to create most of the furniture in the house.
If you’re interested in exploring these cutting machines, we’ve got a project to make an elegant mirror inside. Gayle Forsyth, another newcomer to the hobby, used a more traditional approach in her project, hand-making furniture from plywood. She wanted to make her daughter and son-in-law something special for their first wedding anniversary. Well, the twelfth scale replica of the cafe the couple run in the Lake District is pretty special.
And if you want to take a traditional approach to creating then grab an X-Acto knife, foam and glue to make a simple sofa. Auralea had to raid her boyfriend’s closet to find the fabric she needed, but you can just settle for what’s in your stash.
You’ll need some odd scraps of fabric too, for the quick and easy shirts and blouses. Where you find the fabric is up to you, but old ties are worth a look. That’s not such a mad idea!
