I’m not sure where to start on this issue. Downton Abbey or the box of dynamite?
Well maybe turn to the centre pages to see how Joanie Warren has captured the essence of the BBC series in an opulent room box.
Or see how Princess Di’s iconic sweater has been created in twelfth scale on page 10, and visit an incredible version of her ancestral home, Spencer House, built by Mulvany and Rogers, on the following page.
Or nod along with wicker maker Kamilla Dlugowolska when she tells us: “I like this because it’s never boring. One day I will be a baker or a seamstress, the day after that I’m a carpenter. It’s fascinating that miniatures allow us to experience many different professions while working on one tiny piece. That’s what being a miniaturist means to me – being a multitasking person with a head full of miniature dreams and ideas.”
We’ve featured many houses by the talented Joan Joyce but she was convinced her latest rescue act was a house too far after health problems. But luckily her husband reminded her that minis always make you feel better. Green Gables certainly did that.
Isla Bissbolissian also breathes mini life into vintage pieces, creating tiny scenes in old cameras and books. She shares some of her projects and ideas with us this issue.
Sandra chats with Tina Parsonage on the Isle of Wight about finding the hobby again and talks to Gina Pacheco about the glorious hacienda that shows her love of Mexican culture and style. That’s quite a way from Downton.
Oh… and the dynamite? Maria Mechem’s husband bought her an old doll’s house with some strange letters stamped into the wood. Eventually she worked out they read “high explosives dangerous.” The house was made from an old dynamite box.
Now that’s what I call ending the year with a bang.
