SABRE REBORN
The December 2022 issue of FlyPast features an air-to-air view of North American F-86F Sabre ‘Beauteous Butch II’ on its cover, shot by Mike Killian during a remarkable photo sortie in Florida. Remarkable because Mike managed to capture the launch of an Atlas V rocket from nearby Kennedy in the background! Our cover story documents the equally astonishing rebirth of this classic jet, which is now airworthy in the hands of Doug Matthews.

The potent Hawker Tempest has perhaps been overshadowed by its older sister, the Hurricane. However, the Tempest was a fine warplane and its pilots gave a good account of themselves in the war’s latter stages, as documented by Thomas McKelvey Cleaver.
