When bicycles became common in Canada, they made it possible for people to go farther, faster than they could on foot. Plus they didn’t need food or barns like horses did. The first bikes were hard to ride but soon looked a lot like what we have now, and many were made right here. By the 1890s, Canadians were using bikes for all kinds of things from work to new kinds of fun. Bicycles also meant new freedom for some women and new sports and competitions. There was even a Canadian bicycle unit during the First World War. Whether you ride or not, there’s lots to discover about bicycles in the April issue of Kayak.
