CHESS960 CARLSEN: THE KING OF RANDOM
Once past the initial discomfort, the positions in the early middlegame were mostly fresh and original, though still atypical and unrecognisable. But this was already the fun part. The main idea of the Fischer Random format, as envisaged by its creator, was to show who the better chess player was, without the burdens of theory, preparation and memorisation. The match showed that the better player was Magnus Carlsen. In unfamiliar positions the innate talent for chess, how to harmonise the pieces, comes to the fore and it became obvious that Carlsen is the more talented player.
