Autism Parenting  |  Issue 194
Dear Readers,
August often reminds us to look ahead: to a new grade level, college, or a new job. As parents of a child or an adult with autism, we want those ventures to be free of challenges, successful, and filled with the same joy as riding a carousel, feeling the spray of the ocean, or tasting an icy popsicle, all for the first time. This month’s theme is “Success on the Spectrum”. Society may believe that success means more money or status. Yet, as parents or grandparents of a child on the spectrum, we know true success comes when they say a word or phrase for the first time. Or when the family gets through a vacation with minimal meltdowns. Take time to count the successes your family has experienced and celebrate them. Remind your loved one of these moments so they can reflect on their accomplishments as they forge ahead to new experiences. Enjoy savoring those first sweet tastes and refreshing feelings of success, whatever they may be. Happy reading!
