Our imagination is what makes being a miniaturist so much fun. The most exciting thing for me is when I get a new idea for a build. There’s nothing like that rush! But a healthy imagination takes work to fuel and nurture. We’ve all had those times where we just can’t think of a fun idea or we feel uninspired.
I have been doing some research for this letter about ways to nurture your imagination. The number one thing that was mentioned was reading. When you read, your imagination has to picture the entire scene in your mind. That’s a great way to get your creativity warmed up! Other ideas were to rearrange your environment, change the type of music you listen to and try new skill sets.
I do try a few new creative outlets every year. Two years ago it was needle felting and now I love to incorporate that into doll making. If you have never sculpted, then buy some clay! If you have never painted, then get some small canvases and brushes and paint your pet! Miniatures is an art form that you can incorporate anything into. Just about any creative skill set you try can be added to your miniaturist arsenal of talents.
A few other ideas were to spend more time with creative people, use hand gestures to communicate as you speak, tell stories, try new things, doodle, keep a journal. If there is a tutorial in this issue that you ordinarily would not attempt then try it! It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be fun. Get your creativity fired up!
