Show them we are successful
Despite continued threats of tougher gun laws – both in the USA and around the world – the shooting industry shows no signs of weakening. In fact, quite the opposite if the experience of the recent SHOT Show in Las Vegas was anything to go by.
This year’s event boasted the second highest attendance in its history and, crucially, a record number of buyers over the four days in January. There was a real buzz on the show floor and even on the final day, the Friday,which is traditionally rather quiet, there was plenty of business being done and plenty of smiles among exhibitors.
The mood was very much one of “business as usual”, despite President Obama’s continued calls for tighter gun controls and the uncertainty of an election looming later this year.
I have no doubt that IWA in Nuremberg, where the GTW team will be headed next, will have a similar vibe. Much has been made of calls for a revision of the European Firearms Directive, especially in the light of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.
And in the UK we have seen the Law Commission review describe British gun laws as “confused and unclear”, which will almost certainly mean some kind of overhaul soon.
But the strength of the global gun trade – and it resilience – cannot be underestimated, nor can the demand from legitimate shooters for more and more products to help them enjoy their favourite hobby or sport. American shooters and gun manufacturers continue to make their views very clear to anyone suggesting that further controls need to be implemented.
Having spent not only the four days at SHOT Show but also a day on the industry range event prior to it starting, I can only say that – as always – I find it extremely useful and educational to be able to try many of these new items for myself, especially given the fact that we do not get similar opportunities in the UK.
