Welcome to this Railways Illustrated special issue celebrating all things diesel hydraulic. It’s hard to believe that it is 41 years since the final Class 52 Westerns were withdrawn from service, a class that was responsible for an upturn in the fortunes of diesel preservation that has since saved hundreds of locos from the scrapman.
In this issue we chart the inspiration, development and careers of some of British Railway’s most enigmatic locomotives. The fascinating subject of industrial hydraulics is also examined and we come right up to date with the various DMUs that use hydraulic transmissions on today’s railway. I hope you enjoy the read.
