Buses of Britain Magazine

4 numeri all'anno   |  English
9 Recensioni   •  English   •   Aviation & Transport (Automotive)
From €7,25 per numero
Buses of Britain is a series of quarterly bookazine produced by enthusiasts for enthusiasts and take a snapshot back into a time when the world was a very different place.

Each issue contains 100 pages and varies between the ‘colour files’ and mono editions which contain mainly black and white photographs, featuring much older material, based around the Chris Hodge ‘Stilltime’ Collection and other mono archive collections.

The ‘colour file’ editions are bursting with colour images, mainly from the 1950s and '60s – with some taken in the early years of the 1970s – a period when very few people were recording the bus scene in glorious colour. Fortunately, two men who did, Jeff Colledge and his friend Geoff Lumb, have come together to give us an excellent insight to the contemporary scene at that time, covering the fleets of a variety of operators from the south of England to the Scottish Highlands and from the South Wales valleys to East Anglia.

The mono editions go back even further and, therefore, are largely in monochrome, with some material dating back to the 1930s, but mainly from the early post-war years. Manufacturers’ official pictures and other promotional material, buses at commercial vehicle shows and on test cover a wide range of subjects, but most of the pictures were taken during visits to operators around the country to go with contemporary magazine articles.

As interesting as the buses themselves, in their evocative period liveries, are the street scenes in which they operate, with the advertising, vehicles and fashions of the day providing a wonderful insight into times gone by. Almost 200, previously unpublished images are contained within each issue; you can almost smell the leather seats, hear the clippie's ticket machine and the crash of the gearbox as we set off on a trail of discovery, to a time of municipal transport and early nationalisation of Britain's unique public service vehicle scene – a time long gone and never to return.

Buses of Britain

Buses of Britain Book 17 A town or city’s municipal operation would always be marked by its fleet livery, as familiar to the average resident as the local butcher or greengrocer. But this would be punctuated from time-to-time by the colours of a much different operator, that of a regional bus company. These operators didn’t take the school children home at 4.00pm, or take mum on her weekly shop on Saturday morning, the buses wearing the less-familiar colours took people to other places; towns and cities that at once seemed far away, especially in terms of bus travel, but were often the connection between neighbouring towns and cities, much like the railways, but serving smaller places in between that often didn’t have the benefit of a rail service. In the north-west of England that operator was the Ribble Motor Company, its all-over red livery seen from Liverpool to the south of its territory, to Carlisle in the north. Very much Lancashire-based, centred on Preston, its tentacles also crossed the Pennines into Yorkshire at Skipton, where connections could be made taking passengers deeper into white rose territory. Ribble also majored in express coach services to resorts and other destinations well beyond the county boundary, its legendary ‘White Lady’ and later, ‘Gay Hostess’, services providing the best of long-distance luxury road travel, the double-decker vehicles that sped along the newly-opened section of the M6 motorway wearing a striking livery that showed little, if any, of the corporate red livery of its buses. Book No. 17 has a detailed account of Ribble’s extensive operations, with full colour images from the 1960s and ‘70s bringing the scene to vibrant life.
