The Melbourne Z1 and Z2 Class Tramcars
The last of the Melbourne Z1 and Z2 tramcars were withdrawn from service at the end of April this year. Inspired by American and Swedish practice, and built in Australia by Comeng, the original Z Class were mainly important as the first newly designed tramcars in Australia for more than twenty years. Peter Clark takes a look at both the strengths and the foibles of these ground-breaking vehicles.

In words and pictures, Les Shepherd describes his recent journey on a 2000 Class rail motor Set travelling from Cairns through the wet tropics area of the Kuranda range and out through the Savannah country to Forsayth in Far North Queensland, on the weekly SAVANNAHLANDER run.

Continuing the story from our June issue, Anzac Day morning 25 April finds The Three Amigos at Murrobo photographing an empty wheat train. With nothing else around, and petrol cheap, they decide to head south via Crookwell to Gunning, on the main south, where a whole new adventure begins.

Editor Bruce Belbin recalls a time from his childhood when his late father, Phil, bundled the family into the car and headed off to Goulburn to chase the last of the mighty 57 Class locomotives in action.
