Commonly known as the ‘Thud’ by its crews the Republic F-105 Thunderchief was an American designed fighter-bomber that served with the US Air Force from 1958 to 1984. Capable of Mach 2, it conducted the majority of strike bombing missions during the early years of the Vietnam War. It was originally designed as a single-seat, nuclear-attack aircraft, and a two-seat ‘Wild Weasel’ version was later developed for the specialised Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD) role against surface-to-air missile sites. This book looks in detail at the history and employment of the F-105, highlighting the various differences in avionics, equipment and weaponry and has mono and colour photographic references and walk arounds.
