Premiering on NBC in September 1976, Baa Baa Black Sheep began as a bold adaptation of Gregory “Pappy” Boyington’s wartime memoirs, developed by Stephen J Cannell.
Its pilot impressed audiences, but controversy quickly followed, with critics alarmed by its depiction of drinking, language, and rebellious behaviour. Viewers, however, were drawn to its visceral World War Two aerial combat sequences.
Though it struggled in the ratings, the series endured, later achieving cult status. After 15 years of research, Stephen Chapis delivers the definitive account of a groundbreaking, polarising show that outlived its era and made the F4U Corsair king of warbirds.
