DNA #285 – First Nations 2023

This month is a celebration of our LGBTQIA+ First Nations peoples. We start with the stunning Nathan Simon on the cover (see more of him inside).

We get to know sexy TV presenter Jack Evans, who co-hosted Mardi Gras during WorldPride in Sydney, and who tells us about being out as both Indigenous and gay and how important that is for the kids watching his show, Behind The News.

We catch up with actor-TV presenter Matty Mills, who kindly shed his clothes and allowed us to photograph him getting wet in some revealing gear in the shower. Plus, he has plenty to say about his Aboriginality and why we need more representation in the media and arts.

Miss Elleneous and Miss Information (actually the same person, better known as Ben Graetz) shares her adventures around Australia, curating fabulous arts events and unravelling some of the mysteries of politics!

Our Straight Mate is actor Damion Hunter. “I feel safer around queer people than jacked-up footy players!” He reveals.

Roger Cohen is a Two-Spirit First Nations man from North America whose life changed after carrying a simple placard in a Pride Parade – thanks to Levi’s jeans. And we meet the creative director of The New Native Theatre, incorporating Two-Spirit performers and plays.

As Australians prepare to vote on a significant constitutional change that will recognise Indigenous peoples and establish an advisory body to government, Steven Lindsay Ross argues it’s the very least Australia can do.

Sadly missed, Uncle Jack Charles is remembered in this issue – actor, addict, Aboriginal and unlikely national treasure. We look back at his remarkable life.

Elsewhere this issue we meet non-binary pop star Adam Noviello who says he’s ready to be as big as Troye Sivan, and New Zealand’s first out gay national football team hero, Campbell Johnstone introduces us to his fiancé Ben and shares beautiful photos from their romantic holiday in Turkiye.
